My Obsessive Book-Buying Habit
I love to buy books, especially if they’re high quality at low prices, which basically means, I now buy mostly self-published books. I bought my Kindle Fire a few years ago, and I was surprised to find myself swiping over a dozen times to get to the bottom of my bookshelf. Which made me wonder…how many books have I bought in the past 5 years?
So I spent a few minutes counting. I was incredibly shocked at what I found. First off, I don’t usually download free books unless it’s an author I’m interested in checking out. Otherwise, if I downloaded every free book through the email advertisements we all get, I’d have to buy a few more Kindles.
Therefore, most of my purchases range from $.99-$3.99. That said, when I first got my Kindle, I’d buy more expensive books that were priced no higher than $5.99. Personally, and nothing against you if we’re different in this context, but I just don’t have the cash to fork over that same amount for every book I read.
Besides, I’m a slow reader…with ADD. For example, here’s the list of books I’m currently reading:
Relentless by Dean Koontz
Wrong Side of Hell by Sonya Bateman
Cursed by J.A. Cipriano
Evernight by Kristen Callihan
The Source by J.D. Horn
These are the books that sprang to the top of my head. There are more. Believe me, there are more! The first book on the list, Relentless? I’ve been reading that for at least 6 months. The normal reader could probably finish that in a week. It’s easy reading. But I spend most of my time working, so unfortunately, it leaves little time to do what I love: read!
So, the answer may or may not shock you, depending on how many books you read and whether or not you buy them or borrow them. Here goes: I have 753 books on my Kindle.
On average, I read about 8-10 books a year. (If I had my way, I’d be reading at least 30 books a year, but what can you do?) So let’s go through the math, shall we? All things being equal, if I continue reading 10 books each year, and I stopped adding more books to my Kindle, I’d need to live 75 more years…just to get through them all!
Will that happen? Hopefully. But will I read all those books? Doubtful. Why? Because I keep buying more books, dammit! In the past 9 days I bought 6 books.
Now, how the hell can I continue at this pace…and expect to read all these books? Some people have a problem buying stuff in stores. I guess mine is that I buy books I’ll probably never read.
You think that’s bad? “But wait, there’s more?”
I have at least 100 physical books in my home waiting to be read. So yeah, I’ve got issues. Will I change this twisted habit? Yeah right! My need to read will continue growing and growing and growing…
Please tell me I’m not the only one with this issue!
