Interview with Bestselling Author Rebecca Chastain
I introduced myself to bestselling author, Rebecca Chaistain, about a year ago when I realized we both used the same cover artist. I loved her cover art for Fistful of Evil, and we’ve swapped trade secrets ever since. Although I haven’t read her Gargoyle series, which is totally kicking tail on the Amazon bestseller charts, I really enjoy her Fistful series. (If you like fantasy novels, you should do yourself a favor and check them out!) So allow me to introduce you to Rebecca Chastain!
What are the unique rules of magic in your Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles series? In other words, tell us a little about your world.
The Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles trilogy is world much like the United States circa 1880, but replete with magic. Fantastical creatures coexist alongside humans, and ever person has elemental magic, though the strength of each person’s abilities with fire, earth, air, water, and wood varies greatly. Mika Stillwater, the main character, is a midlevel earth elemental with a specialty with quartz, the most common form of earth. To make the most of her limited abilities and escape a mind-numbing job at a quarry, she freelances at night to craft exquisitely detailed quartz masterpieces with the dream of one day becoming her own boss. However, her plans are interrupted by a baby gargoyle with a desperate plea: The gargoyle’s siblings have been kidnapped and she needs Mika’s help to rescue them. And who among us could turn aside a baby gargoyle in need?
What made you chose to give Mika relatively little knowledge of her magical abilities in Magic of the Gargoyles (Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles book 1)? Why not build a character who was already experienced?
I wanted to create an everywoman hero in Mika. She’s not the strongest elemental, but she’s making the most of her innate abilities, and I adore the theme of hard work and perseverance trumping genetic privilege (in real life and fiction).
At the same time, I wanted to show that sometimes the best gifts hide inside seemingly ordinary talents. Every earth elemental can work with quartz—it’s one of the most common rocks in the world—but Mika is determined to make something of herself, so she’s honed her lackluster talent to something extraordinary. It’s not until she agrees to help the desperate baby gargoyle that Mika realizes her skills can be applied to the living-quartz bodies of gargoyles.
To put it more simply, I wanted to create a hero who came from ordinary origins and achieves greatness through determination, a lot of heart, and a creative use of her talents.
What is yur favorite paranormal creature to write about?
Gargoyles! I know, I’m biased, but they’re so much fun. With very little literature devoted to them, readers have few preconceived notions of what makes a gargoyle, which means I got to make up a lot of fun traits for them. For starters, not only are they as alive as any flesh-and-blood creature, but they talk. They also enhance magic in others, making them incredibly popular (and endangering their lives). There’s no set shape for a gargoyle, either, but I’ve imposed a few rules on them. To be in my novels, they have to:
- be some form of quartz (tigereye, citrine, onyx, carnelian, amethyst, agate, etc.)
- be a combination of at least two creatures
- have wings
Plus there’s the unspoken rule: be lovable! I dare you not to fall for the adorable baby gargoyles in Magic. I’ve been yearning for a baby gargoyle for years now!
A severe lack of magic was a pretty strong inspiration. I was the kid who practiced telepathy with her friends and was convinced I could make myself invisible if I thought about it hard enough. Walking through walls was next on the list. My ability to talk with animals was bound to kick in any day.
By seventh grade, when it looked like I had no latent magical abilities, I started putting my daydreams onto paper. Vicariously living out my magical fantasies through the characters I created turned out to be immensely gratifying, and I’ve been hooked ever since. What are you currently working on?
With the final installment in the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles trilogy just released, I’ve turned my attention to Lured, a novelette in the same universe. It takes place after the trilogy, featuring all the fan-favorite characters. I’ve promised readers that once Curse of the Gargoyles (book 2) reaches 75 reviews on Amazon and Secret of the Gargoyles (book 3) reaches 50 reviews, I’ll release the novelette for free. (Okay, you caught me. It’s a bribe, but an ethical one that results in a treat for my fans happy and gave me an excuse to play in the Gargoyle Guardian universe a little longer, so everyone’s happy.)
To help a baby gargoyle, Mika will risk everything.
Mika Stillwater is a midlevel earth elemental with ambitions of becoming a quartz artisan, and her hard work is starting to get noticed. But when a panicked baby gargoyle bursts into her studio, insisting Mika is the only person she’ll trust with her desperate mission, Mika’s carefully constructed five-year plan is shattered.
Swept into the gritty criminal underworld of Terra Haven, Mika jeopardizes everything she’s work so hard for as she attempts to save the baby gargoyle from the machinations of a monster—and to stay alive…
