So…One Step Away? It’s basically a true story.
I was somewhat scared to write One Step Away because a lot of it was based on my life. Most writers add something of themselves, however little, into each novel, but how many are willing to really reveal who they are and what they really experienced? That’s why I was kind of frightened to insert more than a little element of truth into this novel. But on the other hand…
I really needed to write this story because a good chunk of it truly happened. Before writing this book, I was dealing with romantic heartbreak, and the only way to make sense of what occurred…and get over it, was to write it, while this time granting myself a happy ending.
What aspects of the novel were real, you ask? Let me count the ways…
The romance between Alex and Marisa is partially a true story. The story of both lead characters being librarians is definitely a true story – because I’m also a librarian, and the subplot that separated both characters because of rival libraries also happened in real life. The best friend, Damon, who philosophizes about women (remember, this is one man’s perspective and I don’t agree with everything he says) while also encouraging Alex to live the type of life he’s always dreamed of, is kind of a true story.
So you’ve got a “partial” true story, a “total” true story, and a “kind of” true story. Not confusing at all, right? Anyway, add all that up, and that’s what you get when you hear the words “Based on a true story”— at least in this case.
Now you’re probably asking yourself: what parts were real? Give me the scoop. I need some details.
And you’d be missing the allure of the phrase “Based on a True Story” because I’m far from fascinating. After all, if I led an exciting, I’d probably need to write a biography just to make sure I didn’t forget any awesome parts.
But my life…? Far from captivating! I’m just a librarian who loves to write novels in my spare time because it’s the most fun I could ever hope to have in my professional life. I’ve already revealed this novel ends in a happily ever after. But did I get my very own romantic happy ending after I published this book? Yes, I did.
And I’m convinced having written it was what helped bring my best friend and I into the relationship we now share. So if you read this book and think…”Come on. That would never happen!” Well, you might be just a little too cynical.
So, here’s hoping each of you find your very own happy endings!
